Lost in Translation
Okay, some things in the notes I was given by the foster family have been accurate - her favorite foods (watermelon, bananas, cereal) have been right on and her fussiness before bed, but a few things I can't figure out, with one being her favorite formula 'cause she has yet to drink more than 1 oz. of it for me and the other being that they describe her as "introverted." HUH? This girl is anything but. At the new hotel today, we went the playroom and she goes right up to everybody and joins in the fun, chatters non-stop, shares very well, and definitely holds her own when another child starts beating on her (that happened once). She also sings and does some song with hand motions. It is really cute. I was thrilled today to see her accidentally go up to someone else and realizing she wasn't me, come running to me. She is friendly but clearly wants me there. Yippee!!!
Today she threw a few MAJOR tantrums, one of course on the plane after we boarded but before we took off and it seemed to last forever but was probably 15 minutes. I have never seen anything like it, all because we tried to put a seatbelt on her. Kicking, throwing whatever she could grab, screaming, stiffening up, and my favorite, clawing my face so the left side now has a Frankenstein look to it. She stopped when someone gave her a bag of cookies; she didn't eat them but I guess the bag was enough. The person later told me I should have brought her snacks. Guess she didn't notice the ones that failed on the seat next to me. My boys just haven't trained me properly for tantrums! :) I made sure that as soon as she fell asleep this evening I clipped her nails in case I can't break her of the "let's claw mommy's eyes out" habit before we fly home.
Other than that and a couple near full-blown tantrums we managed to avoid by distraction, she had a fantastic day. She loved her magna doodle while waiting in the airport; she was very intense with it. She loved the playroom and today eagerly accepted my kisses and even gave me one back during her bath! Everyone we meet (and meeting others has been such a great thing here; the playroom really helps that and it is fun to compare stories) says how well she seems to have adjusted. They also say how big she is for two (and the two girls we have met her age she towers over and the boy we met today who is one month younger is the same height though he is definitely stockier). She is a very busy girl let me tell you and her dining out skills leave much to be desired but that is okay 'cause with four kids, our family won't be doing that much! :)
Tomorrow we are getting a tour of the city in the afternoon and we may try out the pool. First thing I plan on doing is buying a stroller for my tired arms!
Good night! Kate

Just when I was going to suggest that you bring home a bunch of those pink pony-tail holders for all her new little fashion-maven friends-I see yellow butterflies; as if she has decided to start a new chapter in her life.
I sure hope that short flight was not really a 'test flight' for her.
Here's to two steps forward and only one back from here on out..you have made great strides so far even if the whole picture might be hard to see in the moment.
Question for Dad..are you short-timers yet?
A kiss and she's running to you -- HOORAY!!! She knows you're her mommy and is learning that she's very lucky to have you there!! I don't envy you those tantrums, complete with scratches. Ugh. The split personality of a two-year-old on top of all that you're already going through! Hopefully your tired legs, arms, and back will get enough rest in the twin bed. Sleep tight! ~Stace
All in all sounds like a pretty good day. I know the scratches are painful, I imagine that that was the only way she knew how to express herself (or at least that is the excuse I use when Carter throws one). I am sure the kiss from Ms. Brynn made it all better.
It sounds like to me a social butterfly is in the making. Cheerleading here we come. (I think between the Knights, Straleys, Broughtons and Feagans we can have a football team and cheerleading squad!).
Best wishes for many more kisses!
Hey all--
Well, we went to my parent's church BBQ tonight--which was inside--and I think Brynn has a twin. He was under the table, on top of the table, eating food off the floor, running to his Papa, running back to his daddy, all over the place. I Did not know Evan and Brynn were seperated at birth. He was all over the place (way more than usual.)
Kate--I think we will be dining at home from now on.
The boys keep asking about Brynn, mommy and grandpa and when will they be arriving back home.
The boys and I are having a guys day out tomorrow. We are going to DC for the Yankees vs Nationals game. Jacob is coming along to help be the bouncer. We are taking the Metro into the city, so Caleb is really excited about that. Price is excited about the ice cream and Evan just wants to wear his baseball jersey (for the 5th day in a row.)
Tell your dad I will be shouting loudly for the Nationals (in honor of him on dads day.)
Caleb told me he loves me tonight in Chinese--so he is practicing up for his little sis.
Hope your day is as good as yesterday--Love ya Kate.
Doug
